NINE
Brad poured another cup of coffee and sat back down at the kitchen table. He’d been up for hours going through the pictures Melinda Stone had given him the night before, but so far he’d found nothing. Truthfully, though, he had no idea what he was even looking for. He kept telling himself he’d know when he saw it. He sure hoped so. This was getting him nowhere fast. He set aside the last stack he’d looked through and took a sip from his cup. He frowned as he pulled some more from the box. Who were all these people, and where had they come from? So far he hadn’t recognized anyone.
Most of the people in the photographs looked like tourists who’d posed while having a good time in one of the clubs. Then there were the musicians and acrobats who’d been caught on film performing in the middle of the street. He wondered if Vince had made as much money as Melinda thought if this many pictures hadn’t been purchased.
Brad shook his head and continued to sort through the ones he’d just pulled from the box. Some he placed in a stack to reexamine later, and others he discarded. He was about to toss one aside when he stopped and picked it up again. He squinted and held it closer to his eyes for a better look.
On the surface the picture appeared to be a group enjoying a birthday party, but closer inspection revealed much more than Brad had first realized. From the posters and music symbols on the wall behind the group, he knew the picture had been taken inside one of the clubs on Beale Street. A man holding a knife, seated at a round table, smiled at the camera as he prepared to cut the birthday cake in front of him. Two men flanked him, and eight more stood behind.
Brad had never met the man in person, but he’d seen enough pictures during his time on the force to recognize the man with the knife—Tony Lynch. Brad turned the picture over, and read the writing on the back. Tony Lynch and guests at his birthday party, March 7, 1993.
Brad didn’t think he’d ever seen the other men in the picture before, but he couldn’t be sure. After all, they’d aged since that photograph was taken and probably looked nothing like they did then.
He jumped up from the table, hurried to his desk in the bedroom, and pulled out the top drawer. The magnifying glass he used sometimes lay inside, and he grabbed it. Back in the kitchen, he held the glass close to the picture and studied each individual’s face. He still didn’t recognize anybody. He was about to lay the photo aside when he moved the glass over the form of a young man standing behind one of the men in the chair.
Something about him looked familiar, but Brad couldn’t decide what it was. He held the glass still and concentrated on the young face.
